Hailee Steinfeld – Love Myself
Yep, actress and (now) singer Hailee Steinfeld just dropped her first single. And it could be the next big thing! Hailee is most known for her role as Emily Junk in Pitch Perfect 2. Singing her own version of “Flashlight” by Jessie J in the movie really catapulted her in the spotlight. In May it was announced that she had signed a record deal with Republic records, with new music being released later that year. ”
“The moment that we met Hailee we found her commitment to music inspiring,” said Republic Records executive vice president Charlie Walk. “She has the vision, natural talent and dedication to compete at the highest level. We are thrilled to be a part of her musical journey.” from Billboard
Now, Hailee dropped her first single “Love Myself”. The song is a light, upbeat pop song, very much to the style of Charli XCX or Icona Pop. The song’s production reminds me a lot of many other pop hits in the last few years, which doesn’t make it any less catchier though. It was produced by Mattman & Robin from MXM Studios (Max Martin’s recording studio/production), who were also responsible for songs like All You Had To Do Was Stay (Taylor Swift), Moments (Tove Lo) or The Original High by Adam Lambert (from the same titled album; I did a review on this, go check it out The Original High review ) It is therefore not very surprising that this song sounds like it’s made for Pop Radio.
“Love Myself” is the next iHeart Radio “On The Verge” song, a program which helped songs like Habits (Tove Lo), Jealous (Nick Jonas) and Nobody Love (Tori Kelly) become radio hits. It will help the song build up audience and the program is going to give the radio listeners time to connect with the song. As I see it, “Love Myself” can easily become a “Nobody Love”-sized hit in the US. With early spins from iHeart Radio stations, it won’t take long until the other Pop stations catch on to the stream and start playing Love Myself.
Overall, this is a really solid debut single. Despite the song being very standard Top 40 radio material, Hailee’s vocals seem quite nice on the track and it makes me wanna hear more of her. Hopefully soon in a different set of music, maybe some ballads without any vocal production that would show her true ability as a singer.
This song will also be featured in my series of “Music Monday” that I will officially launch this coming Monday, along with short reviews of One Direction’s new song “Drag Me Down” and R. City’s “Locked Away” featuring Adam Lambert and possibly more, so stay tuned for that!
