Music Monday #4; Halsey, The Weeknd, VMA Performances, Austin Mahone

Music Monday is a series where I will introcuce and review new songs, albums and artists, songs that are gaining a lot of popularity, or songs that I’m currently obsessed with. I will talk about the reviews I did the previous week and other honorable mentions in the pop music scene.

“BADLANDS” is a new album by up-and-coming singer/songwriter Halsey (with real name Ashley Frangipane). Earlier this year she was opening on tour for Imagine Dragons. For the fact that Halsey is still rather unknown and more “out there” than a lot of other artists, BADLANDS is surprisingly good. The album is really coherent, but sometimes the overwhelming amount of mid-tempos on the album makes the lines between the songs really blurry so they seem less distinct. Overall one of the best albums released this year so far!

The Weeknd – Beauty Behind The Madness

eauty Behind The Madness (what an awesome album title!) is The Weeknd’s (Abel Tesfaye with real name) newest studio album. After dipping in the pop world a bit more with the Ariana Grande collaboration “Love Me Harder” and being on the Fifty Shades Of Grey soundtrack with “Earned It”, The Weeknd teamed up with Pop producer Max Martin for Can’t Feel My Face for one of the best songs of the year. The album is good, but also slightly disappointing. He mainly sings about drugs and sex and it goes overboard a bit. In terms of production the album is great though and really interesting so definitely worth to check it out.

Austin Mahone – Dirty Work

Dirty Work is the lead single for Teen Pop-boy Austin Mahone’s first full length studio album. Austin was discovered from Youtube a few years ago and has been trying to establish himself in the Pop Music scene for a few years now. At first a glance he might seem like a Justin Bieber wannabe, but he actually has much more in store than that. Dirty Work is an 80’s disco influenced pop song. In terms of production, the track offers a nice beat with different synths here and there, some saxophones in the chorus and even some guitars thrown in as part of the background music. Its mixture of different sounds is actually quite interesting and impressive. Even though it’s a Pop song, it still has a quite distinct sound.

Dirty Work is not as good as What About Love, but it’s his second best single so far. Even though it might not do well on the charts, it’s actually a really good single for Austin Mahone and I think he’s gonna be able to surprise a few people with this one. Here’s to hoping his album will follow suit!

VMA Performances – Who delivered the best show?

Yes, it’s that time of the year again. The VMAs were held last night (Sunday). This year they offered quite a variety of performers and tons of surprise guests! The performers included Tori Kelly, Demi Lovato, Pharrell Williams, Twenty One Pilots & A$AP Rocky, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus as a surprise performance and Walk The Moon and Nick Jonas for the pre-show.

See who did the best in my performance rating here:
