Up-and-coming Pop princess Zara Larsson and british producer/singer/songwriter MNEK have teamed up for the awesome duet “Never Forget You”. While Zara has landed major hits in northern Europe (Lush Life went top 10 in Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden. It’s also certified 3x platinum in her home country) she has yet to have her big breakthrough all over Europe. Although “Uncover” was actually a pretty big hit in a few countries like France, Belgium and Switzerland, going top 10 in each of those countries. Go read my review of Lush Life and Uncover HERE. MNEK hasn’t really found big success as a solo artist, however he has produced songs for the likes of Madonna and Kylie Minogue.
When they announced their collaboration I was unsure what I should expect… are we going to get EDM? A Pop banger? The thing with Never Forget You is that it has a bit of everything, which is the strength of the song and one of the things that make it stand out from the “pack”. In fact it’s pretty hard to describe Never Forget You. It definitely has some DJ/House elements and trap influences. But all in all it’s still pretty solid Pop.
Never Forget You starts out with just a piano and Zara’s powerful voice singing some verses with a music that feels really familiar but I really cannot put my finger on it. The chorus comes in pretty quickly and it’s probably the catchies part of the song. “I will Never Forget You, You’ll always be my side, from the day that I met you, I knew that I will love you till the day I die.” The track really lets Zara shine with her vocals, especially on that chorus. The song continues with a small breakdown that will dictate the pace of most of the song from now on, so it definitely picks up a bit after the first chorus. MNEK sings the second verse, and his vocals are surprisingly good. He sounds a bit like Jason Derulo with a slightly less whiny voice. MNEK then joins Zara with singing the chorus and the song goes over to a bridge where they both share different parts. The best part of the song is the last minute though. At the end of the bridge the production changes a bit for a while. This is the part that is a bit more house influenced and it’s used as a way to create a climax in the song with the very last part of the song. In fact, this part is basically the last chorus, but it doesn’t feel like that at all. The thing that makes this part the best though are Zara’s amazing vocals, especially the adlibs where she either belts out high notes or just changes up the vocals from the normal melody. After this there’s the last breakdown before the song ends quite abruptly, but the song is so good that you just wanna replay it over and over again anyway.
Overall, Never Forget You is a really amazing Pop collaboration between two talented musicians. The fact that Zara and MNEK both wrote on the song makes it even more impressive. The song is actually really interesting production wise. It offers quite a lot in terms of variety, which I really do appreciate. But not only that, Zara and MNEK both deliver pretty great vocals on the track.
Never Forget You honestly sounds like a huge hit to me. It’s the kind of song that should be playing on the radio all over the world, but I am not sure it will catch on everywhere. MNEK being british will definitely help the song in the UK and with Zara on it they basically have northern europe on their side already. Now it only needs to cross over to central europe and maybe even the US. All i can say is go get the song on iTunes or stream it on Spotify/Apple Music!
